Fair Market Valuation of Alternative Assets
For Roth Conversions, end-of-year valuations, Form 5500, and QDROs
Fair market value means the price at which property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or sell and both having reasonable knowledge of relevant facts.
What is FMV
The FMV could possibly be significantly less than what you paid for it, based on discounts for lack of control and marketability.
Your custodian will likely ask for your best guess at the end of the year. But when there is a taxable event tied to the value, you will need a qualified appraiser.
Take in-kind distributions to meet required minimum distributions, or do a Roth Conversion without disrupting your investment program.
$300 for each additional asset
